State of the Art Analysis: Smartwatch

State of the Art Analysis: Smartwatch

Smartwatches are Smart devices that are used and worn as a wrist watch. They allow access to Smartphone capabilities with the advantage of always being in close reach.

Some use cases for the Smartwatch:
  1. Swiping the watch as a sort of access card
  2. Receiving quick notifications of information (such as traffic delays or train schedules)
  3. Interactive apps such as buying tickets or searching for travel routes

When we conducted our interviews people seemed positive to the idea of using a Smart device as an alternative to the regular access card. Given that you already have your watch in easy reach it would be practical to use it for such purposes. It could be done by scanning a QR code on the watch or maybe by using some kind of transmission technology like Bluetooth, IR or otherwise.

It is an interesting piece of technology that seem to be rising in popularity. With plenty of companies bringing their own model. With the flexibility that is brought by Operating Systems such as iOS and android, there are a lot of different uses for the Smartwatch. In our context of use I can easily see many different possibilities. We could create an interactive app where you buy your ticket directly from your wrist. Another idea is that you can view your trains current position in real time on your watch.
