A very important part of interaction design is data gathering, especially in the early stages of the project to find problems in the area you are about to address. It will be very interesting to try it out in practice in the future of this course. In previous courses we have used a number of different methods of gathering data, including a variant of triangulation, and it was very successful. I have been apart in many questionnaires and both seen good formulated questions and very bad ones with very limited and linear answers. When constructing a questionnaire you must have a broad range of answers when asking open questions to support everyone's opinions.
You cannot interpret and understand gathered data until you have analysed it. Analysing is a great part of the interaction design process, and one that can and more likely will change the entire direction of a project. Therefore it’s important to construct data gatherings that are comprehensible, easy to analyse and categorize. Much of the work goes into asking the right questions to get the results that were satisfying. You also need to understand the difference in quantitative data and qualitative data. When searching for the overall view you need to ask for quantitative data, but when you need insight and more depth in the answers, qualitative data is the right thing to gather.
Requirements are essential to the success of an interactive product, and getting them right is a challenge. To design an interactive product you have to distantiate yourself towards the product to lower the risks of bias and prejudice that you might have that may be harmful to the project or the usability of the product. When fulfilling requirements you have to set the customer in the center always, no matter what opinions you might have on the design. Sometimes it’s better to know little about a certain product or service than let your previous experiences misguide you.
Questions: What are the risks in gathering a data overview using only qualitative data? Can it be a disadvantage to have experience in a certain product/service when constructing a data gathering on that specific product/service?
